A mobile mechanic's van is a workshop that has to arrive, work all day on someone's driveway and leave without a trace. That puts three demands on it that a delivery van never faces: usable power away from a socket, storage that survives being rummaged through fifty times a week, and security while it sits unattended in plain view for hours.
How do you get power on site without flattening the van?
Diagnostic kit, a compressor, impact tools and lighting all want electricity, and running them off the starter battery is how you end up needing a jump start yourself. The usual answer is a second leisure battery with a split-charge arrangement and an inverter sized for your heaviest tool, or a portable power station if you would rather not modify the vehicle at all. Anything wired into the van is a modification to our asset, so it needs our written agreement before it is installed and the contract will set out what happens to it at the end of the term. Tell us at quote stage and it is simply part of the specification.
How much does a workshop fit-out weigh?
A workshop fit-out is heavy. Racking, a bench, a vice, a compressor, a trolley jack, axle stands, wheel and tyre spares, and drums of oil and coolant are all dense items, and fluids weigh roughly a kilogram per litre. Payload is the vehicle's gross weight limit minus what it already weighs — so the fit-out comes out of your allowance before any parts do. Build the van, load it as you would work it, and put it over a public weighbridge. It is a twenty-minute job that tells you whether you are running legally.
How do you secure a van on a customer driveway?
Your van spends hours parked at unfamiliar addresses with expensive diagnostic equipment inside, and it is visibly a mechanic's van. Deadlocks, an alarm with interior sensing and a ply-lined, bulkheaded load area are all sensible specification items rather than afterthoughts. Signwriting is the other consideration: livery wins work, but it is a change to a vehicle we own, so it needs agreeing in writing and normally has to come off cleanly at the end of the contract. Vinyl that removes without damaging paint is the practical route.

Business contract hire is for limited companies and LLPs. If you trade as a sole trader, or you want the vehicle in your own name, what we can supply is short-term vehicle rental of up to 89 days instead. Incorporating is the step that opens up business contract hire over 24 to 60 months, which is why plenty of tradespeople do it before taking on a van.

Common questions
Can I fit a leisure battery and inverter to a leased van?
It can be done with our written agreement first, because the van is our asset. Agree it at quote stage and it forms part of the contract, including what happens to the installation at the end of the term.
Can I signwrite a leased van?
Usually yes, with our agreement. Removable vinyl is the safe route — the vehicle normally has to be returned to standard condition, and paintwork damage from adhesive removal would be chargeable.
What size van suits a mobile mechanic?
A medium panel van is the common choice: enough length for a bench and racking down one side, enough height to work standing in some models, without the running costs and parking difficulty of a large van.
Is a maintenance package worth it when I service vehicles myself?
That is a fair question to ask us directly. If you can service the van yourself the case is weaker, but a package still covers wear items and gives a fixed monthly cost. We will set out what is and is not included so you can decide.
Most mobile mechanics are self-employed — does that rule me out?
It changes the product rather than ruling you out. A self-employed sole trader hires on short-term van rental of up to 89 days; contract hire is for limited companies and LLPs. A permanent workshop fit-out really wants the longer route, which incorporating opens up.
