An electrician's van is a mobile store: drums of cable, conduit and trunking, consumer units, and several thousand pounds of test equipment that has to be there tomorrow morning. The van that works is rarely the cheapest headline deal — it is the one with the right load length, sensible racking and locks that actually slow someone down. Here is how we spec one.
What size van does an electrician actually need?
Domestic work usually fits a small van comfortably; commercial and industrial work pushes you into a medium panel van, mainly because of length rather than weight. Standard conduit and trunking come in three-metre lengths, and if they will not lie flat on the floor you end up carrying them on a roof bar in all weathers. Cable drums are the other trap — copper is dense, and a few full drums plus a transformer and a set of tools eats into payload far faster than the empty load bay suggests. How do racking and ply lining affect payload?
Payload is the vehicle's gross weight limit minus what it already weighs — so every kilo of racking, ply lining, bulkhead and fitted kit comes straight out of your allowance before you have loaded a single reel. A full steel racking system is not a light item. Two practical answers: choose lighter aluminium or composite racking where the job allows, and take the loaded van over a public weighbridge once it is set up, so you know your real figure rather than the brochure one. Because the van is our asset, any racking or fitted equipment is agreed with us in writing before it goes on and forms part of your contract.
What can the van do about tool theft?
Tool theft is the defining risk of this trade, and the van is only part of the defence. Deadlocks add a separate key-operated lock that does not rely on the factory central locking; slam locks lock automatically the moment the door shuts, which suits anyone in and out of the van all day; ply lining stops a peel-back attack through the side panel. What catches people out is the insurance wording — tool cover often carries conditions such as removing tools overnight or keeping the van immobilised and locked, so read your own policy before you rely on it. Tell us what you want fitted at quote stage and it goes in the specification, not on afterwards.

Business contract hire is for limited companies and LLPs. If you trade as a sole trader, or you want the vehicle in your own name, what we can supply is short-term vehicle rental of up to 89 days instead. Incorporating is the step that opens up business contract hire over 24 to 60 months, which is why plenty of tradespeople do it before taking on a van.

Common questions
Can I have racking fitted to a leased van?
Yes, provided it is agreed with us in writing first. The van remains our property, so fitted equipment forms part of the contract — including what happens to it at the end of the term, which is usually removal and reinstatement to standard.
Small van or medium van for electrical work?
Length usually decides it. If you regularly carry three-metre conduit or trunking and want it inside rather than on a roof rack, a medium van earns its keep. For purely domestic work a small van is often enough and costs less to run.
Does racking really reduce how much I can carry?
Yes. Racking, ply lining and a bulkhead all count against payload before you load anything. It is worth weighing the van once fitted out, because the manufacturer payload figure is for the van as built, not as you use it.
Can I lease as an electrical contractor with a new limited company?
New limited companies are genuinely considered — commercial underwriting looks at the business, its directors and affordability rather than only at filed accounts. We will tell you honestly if we cannot help.
I am a sole trader electrician — can I get a van?
