For 20,000+ miles a year

High mileage van leasing

Yes — FleetMe writes high mileage van contracts for limited companies and LLPs, from around 20,000 miles a year upwards. The rental is higher than a low-mileage headline rate, but far cheaper than under-declaring and settling an excess bill later.

Most advertised van lease rates are built on a low annual mileage, which is why they look competitive. If you drive 25,000 or 35,000 miles a year, that rate does not apply to you — and quietly signing up to it does not save money, it defers the cost to the end of the contract at a rate you agreed without noticing.

Why does mileage move the monthly rental?

A contract hire rental is largely the vehicle's loss in value across your term, spread monthly. Mileage is the single biggest influence on what a van is worth at the end, so a higher mileage band means a bigger drop in value and a higher monthly. That is the honest mechanism, and it is why nobody can offer a genuinely cheap 40,000-mile contract. What you can do is make sure you are only paying for the miles you actually drive — over-declaring costs you every month, under-declaring costs you at the end. Our mileage guide explains how to land on the right number.

How is excess mileage charged, and how do you avoid it?

If you exceed the contracted mileage, the excess is charged at a pence-per-mile rate stated in your agreement before you sign — so you always know the figure in advance. Ten thousand miles over is a bill worth planning for. The fix is simple and it is on you as much as us: tell us as soon as your driving pattern changes. Adjusting a contract's mileage part-way through is usually possible and is nearly always better than discovering the position at the final inspection. We would rather amend a contract than issue a large excess charge.

What does high mileage do to the rest of the contract?

Servicing intervals arrive on distance as well as time, so a high-mileage van sees the workshop more often — which is precisely when a maintenance package earns its keep, because servicing, tyres and wear items sit inside the fixed monthly rather than arriving as bills. Tyres in particular are a real cost at 35,000 miles a year. It is also worth thinking about term length: a shorter contract on a hard-working van can make more sense than a long one, because you hand it back before the expensive years. Ask us to price both.

Not a limited company?

Business contract hire is for limited companies and LLPs. If you trade as a sole trader, or you want the vehicle in your own name, what we can supply is short-term vehicle rental of up to 89 days instead. Incorporating is the step that opens up business contract hire over 24 to 60 months, which is why plenty of tradespeople do it before taking on a van.

Common questions

What counts as high mileage on a van lease?

Anything much above the low bands most headline rates are built on. In practice, contracts from around 20,000 miles a year upwards are treated as high mileage, and 30,000 to 40,000 is normal for courier and multi-drop work.

Is it cheaper to under-declare my mileage?

No. It lowers the monthly and moves the cost to the end as excess mileage, charged at a rate set out in your agreement. Declaring realistically is almost always cheaper overall and avoids a large settlement figure.

Can I change my mileage during the contract?

Usually yes, and it is worth doing as soon as your pattern changes. Amending a contract mid-term is nearly always better than settling a large excess charge at the end. Just tell us early.

Should I take maintenance on a high mileage van?

The case is strongest at high mileage, because servicing intervals come round faster and tyres wear out sooner. Ask us for the rental with and without it and compare against what you realistically expect to spend.

I cover big mileage but I am self-employed — can I take one?

High mileage contract hire is for limited companies and LLPs. A sole trader would be on short-term rental of up to 89 days, where mileage is handled differently. Incorporating is what makes a high-mileage multi-year contract available.
