Landscaping asks a vehicle to do two jobs at once: carry wet, heavy arisings out of a garden and pull a plant trailer, chipper or mower to the next one. Soil and turf are far heavier than they look, and the towing limit — not the licence — is usually what stops you. Both are worth settling before you choose a vehicle.
Do you need a tipper for arisings?
Green waste, turf and topsoil are wet and dense, and shovelling them out of a dropside at the end of a long day gets old quickly. A tipper pays for itself in labour, at the cost of some payload for the tipping gear. Watch the weight: a cage or mesh sides let you fill a bigger volume than the weight limit allows, which is exactly how landscaping vehicles end up overloaded. Load to the weight, not to the top of the cage, and weigh the vehicle loaded once so you know what your own material actually weighs.
What can you tow behind a landscaping vehicle?
Licence entitlement for towing changed in Great Britain: a driver who passed a car test from 1 January 1997 now holds category BE and can tow a trailer up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass without a separate towing test (GOV.UK, towing with a car, 2026). That is rarely the binding constraint, though — the vehicle's own maximum towing mass and its gross train weight are. Gross train weight is the total permitted weight of vehicle plus trailer plus everything in both, so a heavily loaded tipper reduces what it can legally tow. What about waste carrier registration and a quiet winter?
If you take green waste or spoil away from customers' sites you generally need to be registered as a waste carrier with the Environment Agency, or Natural Resources Wales in Wales — and registration has an upper and a lower tier, so it is worth checking which one green-waste removal puts you in (GOV.UK, waste carrier, broker or dealer registration, 2026). The other landscaping reality is seasonality — winter is quieter and the rental still lands. Business contract hire is for limited companies and LLPs. If you trade as a sole trader, or you want the vehicle in your own name, what we can supply is short-term vehicle rental of up to 89 days instead. Common questions
Do I need a tipper for landscaping?
If you regularly remove arisings, turf or soil, a tipper saves significant labour. If you mostly deliver plants and tools and take little away, a dropside or panel van is lighter, cheaper and carries more.
What limits what I can tow?
The vehicle does. Its maximum towing mass and gross train weight are set by the manufacturer, and a fully loaded vehicle reduces what is left for the trailer. Licence entitlement is a separate question from the vehicle's limits.
Can I fit a towbar to a leased vehicle?
A towbar can be specified as part of the vehicle, agreed with us in writing before supply. Retrofitting anything to a vehicle we own needs our consent first, and the contract will say what happens to it at the end of the term.
How do I handle a quiet winter on a lease?
Set the term and mileage against your whole year, not your busiest months, and keep the monthly rental at a level the quiet quarter can carry. We would rather quote something sustainable than something you regret in January.
